Research Standards

Research Standards Availability

NITMIBIO is building a library of analytical reference standards. Until it is ready, here are trusted sources for purchasing research standards.

Current status: In development

Not yet available for order

NITMIBIO standards products are still being developed. Any research-use-only standards shown on this site are listed for catalog reference only and cannot be ordered yet. We will update this page when standards become available to members.

Official pharmacopeia and certified standards

These are the strongest references available. Use them whenever an official standard exists for your compound.

Pharmacopeia

USP

Highly characterized peptide API and impurity reference standards, such as calcitonin salmon and oxytocin. Orders go through the USP Store.

Pharmacopeia

EDQM (Ph. Eur.)

Ordered through the EDQM WebStore or by email, and the order must be on company letterhead. A good place to look for GLP-1 compounds such as semaglutide.

Certified reference

NIST

Certified peptide materials such as SRM 998 Angiotensin I. Useful for checking that your HPLC system and method are working, not for testing specific products.

Commercial analytical suppliers

Use these suppliers for compounds that have no pharmacopeia standard.

Commercial

Cayman Chemical

A good US source for research peptides that have no pharmacopeia standard, such as BPC 157 acetate with batch-specific data. Online ordering with a business account.

LGC Standards

Peptide reference materials such as oxytocin, bradykinin and angiotensin II.

Sigma-Aldrich / MilliporeSigma

Peptide and protein standards and certified reference materials.

How to buy

  1. Open a business account. USP, EDQM, LGC and Sigma usually want a company name, shipping address and sometimes tax or end-use information. Most won't ship to a residential address.
  2. Pick the right grade. Use “reference standard,” “analytical standard” or “CRM” grades. Don't use a research-use-only vendor's product as your standard, because that just compares one vendor to another.
  3. Check the paperwork before ordering. The certificate should show HPLC purity, MS identity, net peptide content and the counter-ion (such as acetate or TFA). You need net peptide content to calculate how much peptide is actually in your samples.
  4. Order small amounts. 1–10 mg is typical. USP and EDQM vials are often around 10–25 mg and can cost several hundred dollars or more.
  5. Handle them carefully when they arrive. Store lyophilized standards frozen and let them warm up in a desiccator before opening. Record the lot number, the certificate and the date you open each one.

When no official standard exists

Many research peptides have no official standard. In that case, buy the best-characterized lot you can find (for example, from Cayman Chemical), then confirm its identity yourself with LC-MS or through a third-party lab.
